Entrepreneur opens cafe for moms and their kids

Summary
In Ottawa, December 2009, Adeline Chapron opened Kid Kaf because she noticed parents were having a hard time in coffee shops. Space in shops was limited and tantrums were a hassle. She thought that parents needed a place to relax with the kids. Chapron thought that this would be a great business idea. She opened the shop with her husband, however she is the one resopnsible for the business operations. Chapron had worked as a manager at a family-friendly cafe in Calgary, and with the business knowledge she found from that position, she opened her own shop. The café includes a playground for kids and an adult lounge. There is also a stroller parking outside the cafe. Chapron also plans on starting a program called “Kid Kare,” where parents can drop off their children for a few hours while they attend to their own needs.

  1. This is an interesting article! I think it's cool how they actually have such a thing. It also drives in a new target market - families with younger children. Everything in the store is made for the sole purpose of satisfying the need of the customer and I think this is a very key point when designing a store.

  2. I agree, I think a store that can find a different target market, and can fulfill the customers needs, will be a very successful business.

  3. I love the idea of how Adeline create a cafe for family because I think it helps costumers (Family) bond. I also like how she makes a small babysitting program too. I wonder how she would manage if she's the one that is responsible for business operations.

  4. With much competition in the market, this particular entrepreneur found an external opportunity, a cafe for parents, and pretty much made it come true. These particular items define target markets and to find these unique opportunities help businesses exceed.

  5. The idea for opening the Kid Kaf is a great external opportunity. But the market for this is not all that great because the majority populations of Canadians are of older age. But none the less itsgot great potential.

I agree that it targets a differnet market and its got great protentials. But i think that Canada do not have as much demand for this market, because of the age groups in Canada is mostly older and most couples do not have childrens these day

I agree that the age groups in canada are mostly older. However, I disagree with the fact that couples do not have children these days. According to "http://www.indexmundi.com/canada/total_fertility_rate.html" the average woman in Canada (2010) has 1 or 2 children. I think that Canada still has a strong demand for this market.

  8. I would have to agree to this article because majority of Canada has children. This would allow entrepreneurs to get good profit because unlike trends, everyone has kids so it would never go out of season.

  10. I think this is a very bright and original idea for the entrepreneur to open a cafe that has all these facilities for kids. Most parents have a busy life and barely get any time for themselves. Through Adeline Chapron's Kid Kaf, parents will be able to drop their kids off while they have some time to themselves. I think it's an excellent idea and her business will really prosper since it has a component different from all the competitor coffee shops.

  12. This article sounds like opening a daycare but there are some differences which distinguishes it from a daycare. Also, one funny thing is that this article reminded me of IKEA where parents shop around while their kids can be dropped off in the little play area.

  13. The idea is very new so it has selling power. However, the new program called "Kid Kare" that they are planning to launch may take time to establish itself as a daycare within a coffee shop. The idea sounds unreal; you drop off your kids in a coffee shop where random strangers can easily walk in and out of. It sounds unsafe, and parents may not accept the program. If I was a parent, I would rather drop my kids off at a real daycare where there are trained supervisors.

If this were to work out, it will also be a hassle to work as a coffee shop manager and a daycare manager. She, of course, can hire babysitters and/or trained supervisors to look after, cook, and play with the kids while their parents are at work, but I think Adeline Chapron should focus more on improving a consumers experience at her coffee shop rather than a kids experience at the playground area in the shop. That is why I disagree with the Kid Kare program. I don't think it will work out the way Chapron envisioned it to be.

  14. To say that Chapron has a really original and creative idea would be an understatement, because I think that it is more than a description. I mean, I think anyone can think of something original or creative but the difference between them and her is that she has legitimate objectives to pursuing the business; There are additional reasons to just serving hot beverages. It is obvious that she has done her research and been thoroughly searching for windows of opportunity.

The idea of the “Kid Kaf” is very attention grabbing and worthy of looking into for consumers because of its simple objectives of parents taking a quick break without having to worry too much about the kids since they would be having fun on the playground.

I do have to agree with you and your concerns of the new program “Kid Kare”. Although I don’t think the new program is unsafe per se because if the place will be in that daycare situation then surely they would have hired people specialized in that area of taking care of kids; But I think that the whole idea of using short time periods to dropping the kids off to a daycare would be way off Chapron’s original goals. She should be expanding her business with the original idea first, especially since she still has a small amount of consumer awareness because of her new business. She should also focus on surveys, so she knows that she is fulfilling and satisfying every new customer’s visit to the store and create feedback from customers on how she can improve on her services or products. Sure, the “Kid Kare” still does compliment the “Kid Kaf” but seeing as she is new with the business still, she shouldn’t be too focused on creating a new market, especially one that she may not be too familiar with herself.

  16. I think opening this kind of cafe is a really good idea. Having new ideas and find out what consumers want and need are very important. Adeline saw the problems of many parents having hard time at coffee shop, and she turned that into her business opportunity. That is every entrepreneurs should always do .
